We are having such a fun week! The only downside has been sick kids! I hope that your little ones all get better soon.
We celebrated Groundhog day, even though the groundhog saw his shadow and we will have six more weeks of winter. I'm not surprised. We made a groundhog puppet, talked about the tradition of groundhog day, why we have it, what he does, what it means, etc, made our little groundhog in a cup, which was the children's favorite part of the day. We also talked about shadows and did a couple of matching activities. It was a busy busy day, but lots of fun.
For our patterns and penguins day-we read, "Pattern Fish" by Trudy Harris. She is a local teacher who is also now a much published author! It is a great book to talk about patterns. We have been doing a different pattern with shapes each month on our calendar. We talked about the different types of patterns, (ab, aab, abb, abc) You will be surprised at how quickly your children can pick out these patterns! Ask them to make a pattern for you. We completed a pattern sheet where they had to cut and glue on the correct shape to finish the pattern. They did super! I was very happy.
For penguins, we talked about all of the different types of penguins, how the feed their young and take care of the eggs, how they swim, walk and slide, but don't fly and then we made our winter sport penguins. Some were skiers, some were snowboarders, but they were ALL adorable! We also watched about 5 minutes of the movie, "Surf's Up" to show the kids all of the different types of penguins. Even though it was a cartoon, it was a great teaching tool!
Fun fun weeks coming up! Please remember to watch your calendars for important dates! :)
