Playing Catch-up! H, I, and L.

Oh wow. I am so far behind. So sorry for not being more on top of things. My life has gotten even more crazy..if that is possible! Here is a quick re-cap of what we've been doing here at Smart Start!!

Hh Week-Hats and Helpers and Hoot Owls.
We learned all about the different kinds of hats the people wear and also about what hats some of the helpers in our community might wear. We talked about our neighborhoods and those who are our helpers, such as policemen, firemen, mailmen, teachers, doctors, nurses, etc. The kids were very insightful about who they think of when they think of helpers. We had a fun hat parade and each child got an "award" for the hat that they chose to wear to school. On our Owl day, we learned all about Owls! We talked about what they eat, their sleeping habits, how they are born out of eggs, etc. We then made a fall owl all covered in fun beans, peas, noodles, etc. It was one of my favorite projects so far this year. We also talked about the letter H and what sound it makes. "H is for Honey Horse". Your kids are getting really good at associating the sounds with the name of the letter. We are still working really hard on learning the names of the letters by sight alone.

Ii week- Indians and I can Eat Healthy
Our Indian day was really fun. We talked about the Native American Indians and some of their traditions. How they hunted, what type of houses they lived in, what they wore, etc. And to finish off the day, we made our little Indian Papooses with their Indian babies tucked safely inside. I was amazed at what ownership each child took for their little paper baby. It was really cute. We also made our Indian drums! I hope your children have been playing them to their hearts content.
Our I can eat Healthy day was all about what foods are good for you and what foods taste good, but we probably shouldn't eat a whole bunch of. I had each of the kids think of foods that were good for you. The list ranged from Macaroni and Cheese to Pizza, to Cheeseburgers. :) We focused on the fruits and veggies and grains. We read the story about "There was an Old Lady who swallowed a Pie". We made the food cards and Old Lady and then retold the story. I hope your children tried to tell you their story in their own words. Super fun.

Today was our first Ll day. We talked all about Turkeys! Your kids should've brought home a rather large paper turkey. They LOVED making them. Also, we read our Clifford magazines which have some real facts about Turkeys. We were also working on a fun Thanksgiving and counting booklet. Most kids weren't finished coloring-so if you need a fun short project for them to work on during Thanksgiving week, have them pull it out. Our second Ll day will be focused on talking about Thanksgiving and what being Grateful means. It will be a fun day, topped off by pumpkin pie and whipped cream. (Shh, it's a secret!)

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday week. Be safe and we'll see you in December!!
